Queensland's new smoke alarm legislation: Why you need interconnected smoke alarms
There are new regulations around smoke alarm installation Brisbane homes need to be aware of. Interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms are now standard for all properties and are required.
From January 1, 2022, all smoke alarms must be photoelectric (AS 3786-2014) and interconnected. Your smoke alarms also must be under 10 years old to be compliant.
Not sure if your smoke alarms are compliant? Thousands of Queenslanders are still living with inadequate fire safety systems without even knowing it! We’re here to help – drop us a line and we’ll ensure your smoke alarm system is keeping you safe.

- You have smoke alarm/s that are over 10 years old
- You do not have interconnected smoke alarms installed, or your interconnected alarms are not photoelectric smoke alarms
- You don’t have smoke alarms in each bedroom, in hallways or areas that connect bedrooms, as well as on every storey (regardless of whether they contain bedrooms)

Interconnected smoke alarms are linked to one another, meaning that if one detects smoke, the others will alarm, too. This means that, regardless of where you are in your home, you’ll be made aware. In the event of a house fire, interconnected smoke alarms give everyone more time to escape or take action against the fire.
Photoelectric smoke alarms are considered more accurate than older ionisation alarms that used to be standard. Photoelectric alarms use a light source as well as a sensor to detect all kinds of smoke, especially the smoke from smouldering fires that can lead to larger fires. Ionisation alarms are designed to detect smoke from fast-flaming fires, and – as a result – often get false alarms from things like cooking.
You can’t always tell if your alarms are faulty, but some key indicators are flashing lights, frequent beeps, or a ‘weak’ sounding tone. If you’re often receiving false alarms, it’s possible that your smoke alarms are either faulty or in need of a thorough, expert cleaning. Ensure you’re safe with an annual check-in!
We recommend getting your smoke alarms checked, cleaned, and tested every 12 months – or any time you suspect a malfunction. When dust and debris settle on your smoke alarms, it can impair their functioning, sometimes triggering irritating unnecessary alarms or even risking your safety by impairing their sensitivity.
